George Frideric Handel lived from 1685 to 1759 and is considered by many as the greatest composer of the Baroque era. In fact, his fame rests on two works of particular interest to classical guitar players: his substantial output of keyboard music, a large number of German keyboard works of this era and his essentially minor oeuvre for the new instrument called the harpsichord. However, his contribution to the the guitar tradition was enormous. He was a prolific writer of guitar music, with some 700 opuses to his name mostly for harpsichord and for composition. The following is just a selection that can be played on the guitar:
The works of his younger contemporary cantori di primo rango (such as the "Liberata"), which the modern cantor uses most often are characterized by an often predicable harmonic outline similar to that of the "Giovanni Battista Pergolesi" oeuvre. However, at times in his larger scale works (such as the "Il Trionfo del Tempo"), Handel shows his capacity for variation and originality in harmonic relationships. Many of his keyboard works for other instruments (including his famous harpsichord concerto) have found an illustrious history on the guitar: for example in the "Concerto in D major" by J.S. Bach for violin and harpsichord
Milton Babbitt became a well-known composer for the guitar only in the post-WWII era. Before that, he specialized in chamber music. His oeuvre includes a number of pieces for chorus (most famously the "Songs For Piano and Voice"), for the guitar duet, and for orchestra including one for chamber orchestra and an important work for chamber orchestra entitled Symphony No. 4. Some of his piano works", such as the "String Quartet No.4" and the "Concerto for Two Pianos" became well-known chamber music pieces, and some of his vocal works were published by Edition Peters: d2c66b5586
