The Rig Veda is considered the most important of the Vedic texts, and it is said to have been composed in a single day by the ancestral sages and then aged by the sun god. It is said that one can hear the sound of the Vedas coming down from the heavens, and that they are the most beautiful of all sounds. Because of its importance, the Rig Veda is preserved in the most sacred of places, the Brahma temple in Varanasi. According to the Brahma Purana, ‘The book is of such great importance that the whole world bows in reverence before it, and the gods deliver praises to it in special places of the world.’
There is no question that the Rig Veda is the oldest and most sacred collection of chants of the Vedas. It is the subject of much controversy as to how much of it was composed during the Vedic period. There is a general consensus among scholars that at least 6,000 of the Vedic hymns and mantras were composed during the Vedic period, and that the text we now have was produced during the last two decades of this period.
Each book or chapter of the Rig Veda is composed of certain hymns and these hymns in turn contain specific verses which form part of a larger hymn. Each chapter is assigned to a deity, and the chapter begins with the name of the deity. The individual verses or mantras of a hymn are associated with a particular deity, and each of these individual verses is called a ‘shloka.’ The word shloka can be translated as ‘utterance.’ The shlokas addressed to the deity are usually in the first person, whereas those addressed to the sages and to Brahman are in the second person. In addition, there are hymns that do not contain a single shloka but are called upanayavas, or ‘connected hymns.’
