The present study was part of a larger project funded by the International Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP). The original goal of this project was to compare morphological characteristics of two subclasses of macaques with known social status: socially dominant and subordinate group members. This study used two methods to compare differences in a cohort of juvenile rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) from a wild-born population (n=95). Each rhesus monkey was assigned a combination of rank and behavioral responses (aggressive, submissive, defensive, affiliative) based on the responses it developed when interacting with other members of the troop during daily social observations from approximately 2 weeks until 3.5 years of age. When the rhesus monkeys attained full-strength mature teeth (i.e., third molar eruption), a body-condition score (BCS) was assigned by scaling the rhesus monkeys for dorsal muscle condition. The morphological study was part of a larger project focused on the development of a methodology to determine the impact of early life social experience on postnatal growth, body composition, and physical activity (see reference for details on methodology). The purpose of the present study was to analyze morphological and structural variations in the pelvis, pelvis cross-sections, and the face of the juvenile rhesus macaques. The rhesus monkeys were born in captivity. All monkeys were housed in a semi-free-ranging environment. In order to capture live images of the monkeys, and obtain images of the pelvis region, a group of six researchers was selected to participate in this experiment. The study was conducted at the University of Texas at Arlington, in College Station, Texas, USA.
Data-acquisition was performed at an average of seven years of age. About one third of the monkeys were male and two thirds female (n=79). None of the animals in the study were captive born. All study animals were born in captivity. None of the animals were kept in a zoo at any time before, during, or after the study. Each of the monkeys was identified individually over three days of data collection by a computer algorithm, using visual and behavioral cues. The study was confounded by the social rank, identity (monkeys were not split based on sex or age), and body condition of the animals. It is necessary to acknowledge these as potential sources of bias in the data. d2c66b5586
