How to Use HandBrake 0.9.8 Portable to Convert Video Formats

HandBrake is a free and open source tool that lets you convert video from nearly any format to a selection of modern, widely supported codecs. It is available for Windows, Mac and Linux platforms. But what if you want to use HandBrake on a computer that does not have it installed? Or what if you want to carry it around on a USB drive and use it on any machine?

That's where HandBrake 0.9.8 Portable comes in handy. This is a version of HandBrake that does not require installation and can run from any folder or removable drive. You can download it from Portapps[^2^], a website that offers portable versions of various applications.

In this article, we will show you how to use HandBrake 0.9.8 Portable to convert video formats easily and quickly.

Step 1: Download and Run HandBrake 0.9.8 Portable

To download HandBrake 0.9.8 Portable, go to Portapps[^2^] and click on the Download button for the latest portable setup. The file size is about 20 MB and it will be saved as handbrake-portable-win64-1.5.1-8-setup.exe.

Once the download is complete, run the setup file and follow the instructions to install HandBrake 0.9.8 Portable on your desired location. You can choose any folder or drive, such as your desktop or a USB stick.

After the installation is done, you can launch HandBrake 0.9.8 Portable by double-clicking on handbrake-portable.exe in the folder where you installed it.

Step 2: Select a Video Source

When you open HandBrake 0.9.8 Portable, you will see a simple interface with a few buttons and options. To select a video source, click on the Source button at the top left corner and choose one of the options:

  • File: This allows you to select a single video file from your computer or drive.

  • Folder: This allows you to select a folder that contains one or more video files.

Step 3: Choose an Output Format

To choose an output format, click on the Presets button at the right side of the interface and select one of the predefined profiles that suit your needs. You can choose from various categories, such as General, Web, Devices, Matroska, Legacy and Custom.

For this example, we will choose General > Fast 1080p30, which is a common format for high-definition videos.

Step 4: Adjust Settings (Optional)

If you want to customize the output settings further, you can click on the tabs below the Presets button and tweak various parameters, such as:

  • Picture: This allows you to change the resolution, aspect ratio, cropping and filters of the output video.

  • Video: This allows you to change the codec, quality, framerate and encoding options of the output video.

  • Audio: This allows you to change the codec, bitrate, samplerate and mixdown of the output audio.

  • Subtitles: This allows you to add or remove subtitles from the output video.

  • Chapters: This allows you to add or remove chapters from the output video.

  • Advanced: This allows you to change some advanced settings for x264 encoder.

For this example, we will leave the settings as they are.

Step 5: Start Encoding
