That meant that people could now download music files to their computers without having to deal with physical media like CDs or tapes. The rise of file-sharing websites like Grokster's and Napster led many record companies to try to take legal action against websites that provide people with these services. The record companies initially won some of their suits, but the U.S. Supreme Court later overturned these rulings, saying that online services like file-sharing websites are not liable for copyright infringement.
