A preliminary study was conducted to investigate the effect of aqueous extract of Carica papaya (CPE) on exudative infiltration and epithelial thickening induced by cigarette smoke in the cheek pouch of Syrian golden hamster. Hamsters received different doses of CPE via oral administration on alternate days for 21 days. Histopathological examination of cheek pouch sections and levels of myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in the pouch homogenate of the hamsters were done. CPE was effective in reducing the levels of epithelial thickening and exudation in hamsters exposed to cigarette smoke (CS) and the suppression of CS-induced inflammation was dose related.
